The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. Newberry (1804-68), which left what later amounted to approximately $2.2 million for the foundation of a “free, public” library on the north side of the Chicago River, if his two children died without issue. Minnesota public official and Indian agent. Born in Ohio in 1848, Frater moved to Brainerd, Minn., in 1881. He served as Crow Wing County treasurer, 1888-1904, state senator, 1905, and Indian agent at the Leech Lake Agency from Aug. 7, 1906, until at least 1910.
